Conversion of Stable building for office use 2000 - 2001
Client:
CRH plc
Project Manager and Consulting Engineers:
Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates
The restoration and conversion of the stable building for additional office accommodation at Belgard Castle is the first element of the masterplan for the future development of the headquarters of CRH Plc, one of Ireland’s largest multinationals.
This work is a good example of the practice’s architectural approach to conservation, developed during the restoration and conservation of 3 & 4 Capel Street and the former Adelaide Hospital. This approach is; to respect and restore the original architecture of the building and recreate missing elements if necessary but to express new elements in a complementary contemporary way.
Under the direction of Dr. Thomas Brennan of TBK, the derelict roof of the stable building was replaced with a new roof similar to the original roof. However it was decided to allow the new roof to follow the bowed lines of the stone walls.
The stone walls were carefully repaired using a lime mortar finished with a layer of soot to visually tie it in with the existing.
Only the existing opes were used for windows, to maintain the original ratio of wall to window.
The joinery is simple square section hardwood, appropriate to the original farmyard nature of the building.
The interior is rendered with a lime putty mix that follows the original contours of the walls.
The offices are connected to the adjacent mews building, which was converted to offices sometime ago, by a new contemporary glazed link.
